JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria: Age Limit, Attempts and Qualification Rules
JEE Advanced is the sole entry point to the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology, but access is restricted. Only the top 2.5 lakh JEE Main rank holders are eligible to appear, and each year, more than one lakh candidates register for around 17,000–18,000 IIT seats.
With so much on the line, a single overlooked rule—like an expired OBC-NCL certificate, exceeding the attempt limit, or a gap year after Class 12—can result in missing an entire admission cycle. This guide covers every JEE Advanced eligibility requirement in clear, practical language.
What Is JEE Advanced Eligibility?
The Joint Admission Board (JAB) verifies all aspirants against these conditions to allow registration for the entrance. These are not just one cut-off, but a combination of JEE Main performance and age factor, with Class 12 marks or attempt.
Who can appear for JEE Advanced? The five core conditions
1. JEE Main score. You have to appear for JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) and be in the top 2,50,000 rank holders (all categories) in the exam. You will not be eligible if you qualify for JEE Main only through Paper 2 (B.Arch/B.Planning).
2. Age limit. Candidates must be born on or after a specified cut-off date. For the 2025 cycle, this date is October 1, 2000. SC, ST, and PwD candidates receive a five-year age relaxation.
3. Attempt limit. 2 attempts total, both must be in 2 successive years. Each attempt counts regardless of pass or fail.
4. Class 12 year window. Your first Class 12 board attempt must be in the current year or either of the two preceding years.
5. Class 12 results. You need at least 75% aggregate marks (or 65% for SC/ST/PwD), or a place in your board’s top 20 percentile for IIT admission.
How is the top 2.5 lakh break-up decided?
5% horizontal PwD reservation is there in each category. Two students scoring the same in JEE Main may result in very different JEE Advanced rankings.
What Is the JEE Advanced Age Limit?
The cut-off date for a general category candidate in 2025 is October 1, 2000, and SC, ST, and PwD candidates get an additional five-year relaxation, raising the date to October 1, 1995. The familiar date rule to keep in mind is “October 1 of the year, which is 25 years before the exam.”
See here that there is no age bar for JEE Main - there is only an age bar for JEE Advanced.
Does the age limit change every year?
Yes. Since the threshold is a calendar date, not a set age, it resets with each attempt. A year might make a difference for a candidate who qualified for JEE one year, but would be excluded next, and it’s another argument for not taking a JEE attempt lightly.
JEE Advanced Attempt Limit: How Many Times Can You Appear?
Each candidate is allowed up to two attempts, which must be made in two consecutive years. Merely appearing for the exam once counts as an attempt, regardless of the outcome.
Does taking admission at an IIT end your eligibility?
Yes. If you get into an IIT by paying seat acceptance fee, you cannot attempt JEE Advanced again. If you are already in IIT and not happy with your IIT branch and want to get it changed, then you should go for internal branch change and not try JEE Advanced again.
JEE Advanced Qualification: Class 12 Rules and Marks
There are two distinct conditions in Class 12. First, the year window: your first board attempt has to be in this year or the last two years. Second, the performance clause: 75% aggregate marks, or 65% for SC/ST/PwD students, or a rank in your board’s top 20 percentile list. Both are checked at JoSAA counselling and during admission.
What if you do not meet the 75% criterion?
You may still receive a rank and take part in counselling, but an IIT can deny admission if you do not meet the marks or percentile requirement. Many students choose to repeat Class 12 in an attempt to maintain eligibility, and Shikhar Classes guides aspirants with year-planning calls to help ensure that a correctable marks shortfall does not prevent an IIT admission.
JEE Eligibility for OBC-NCL, SC, ST, EWS and PwD Candidates
Certificates for the reserved categories should be in the prescribed format and issued within the prescribed timeline - OBC-NCL and EWS certificates should be issued in the current financial year only. The benefit shall be given if the certificate is valid at the time of JEE Main registration, JEE Advanced registration, and JEE Advanced seat allotment/admission. An expired certificate may push a candidate to the general pool.

No. NTA has done away with the age bar for JEE Main - it is only JEE Advanced, which has this restriction based on the birth date.

75% aggregate marks OR 65% aggregate marks (SC/ST/PwD), or top 20 percentile position in your board.
4. Are droppers eligible for JEE Advanced?
