NEET Eligibility Criteria Explained: Age Limit, Qualification and Attempt Limit
More than 24 lakh students signed up to write the NEET UG exam, which was one of the largest medical tests in the world in a recent cycle. But before syllabus and pattern, the primary question every Class 12 student has is, “am I eligible to take the exam?” NEET eligibility makes it clear before students start preparing, as a false attempt costs an academic year.
What Is NEET Eligibility and Who Can Apply?
NEET eligibility is the total aggregate of the rules – age, qualification, passing percentage, attempt, and nationality, as laid down by the NTA before a candidate applies for NEET UG. If a candidate falls short of even one criteria, the application is discarded during application verification, regardless of the effort and practice put into NEET preparation.
Since the NTA and NMC change these regulations from year to year, aspirants should always cross-reference against the respective year’s information bulletin.
NEET Eligibility Criteria at a Glance
You usually only need to go through this table a single time to be certain if you are eligible for NEET or not. Every bit of information for every row in this table is only to make your life easier by manually confirming your own case without worrying about any guesswork.
What Is the Age Limit for NEET?
Many NEET applicants are perplexed by the age limit for NEET since a few years ago there was an age limit, but it was revoked. Only the minimum age requirement set by NTA is applicable – there is no upper age restriction.
1. A minimum of 17 years of age. You should have completed 17 years as on 31 December of the year of admission. If your date of birth is after that cut-off, you will become eligible only in the next cycle. This is why so many Class 12 students in their seventeenth year must wait one extra session.
2. No upper age limit. Candidates in their late twenties or thirties remain eligible to register, as long as they fulfill the NEET qualification criteria. There is no age restriction for working professionals or repeat aspirants. Age serves only as an entry requirement, not as a restriction on participation.
NEET Qualification: What Are the Class 12 Requirements?
The NEET qualification is based on the Class 12th exam, and the combination of subjects holds equal importance as the percentage. The candidate should have passed Class 12th or an equivalent from a recognised board/university with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English Core as compulsory subjects, plus all of them individually passing. Open schooling and equivalent would also be recognised.
What are the expected qualifying marks for NEET 2026?
1. General category. 50% in total in the qualifying exam, approximately the 50th percentile (this is the qualifying “floor”, not the admission “floor” as the actual cut-offs are much higher.)
2. OBC, SC, and ST categories. The cushion is much higher now at 40% marks, or the 40th percentile, setting a softer entry for candidates of reserved categories. State counselling cut-offs will probably vary greatly.
3. General-PwD. A relaxation to 45th percentile is granted for candidates who qualify under this benchmark. The certification is verified at the time of counselling.
NEET Attempt Limit: How Many Times Can You Attempt NEET?
There is no NEET attempt limit. The NTA allows candidates to take the test any number of times, provided they meet the requisite age and qualification criteria, and do not get a penalty for such attempts.
This leaves the only criteria for droppers to decide, the minimum age limit at the beginning and their own appetite for the exam. Most serious aspirants take two or three attempts before an aspirant leaves for other options. You can read inspiring NEET success stories to understand how repeat attempts often shape final results.
Can I Give NEET Without Biology on 12th?
No. Biology or Biotechnology is compulsory for NEET qualification requirements. So, a pure combination of PCM will not qualify the criteria. Per the NMC’s new rules, candidates must have studied Physics, Chemistry, and Biotechnology (where Biotechnology is a replacement for Biology). Check the list of the subject combination that you had studied in the board before assuming the NEET eligibility. Is NEET for Only MBBS?
NEET UG is much bigger than MBBS only. In fact, it is the only entrance for not just MBBS, but BDS, BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS, Veterinary Science and many other similar courses in government or private medical colleges. You can explore competitive exams after 12th to see how these paths compare.
A student who fails to get an MBBS seat can join a course like BDS using the same NEET UG score. That is why NEET eligibility is relevant for each medical student, not only MBBS. If you are targeting government colleges, review the list of top govt medical colleges in India and plan accordingly.
Can 11th Students Apply for NEET?
No, students appearing in Class 11 cannot apply for NEET. NEET eligibility criteria states that the candidate must have passed Class 12 or appear for the same in the same year as the NEET exam. Class 11 is the year of preparation. A structured IIT JEE NEET smart study roadmap can help you use this year well.
This applies to the 2026 and 2027 cycles as well – there is no early-application option available for eleventh-grade students. Learn more about the benefits of early preparation for IIT JEE and NEET.
NEET Eligibility Criteria 2026 and 2027: What Changes Year to Year?
The NTA issues the NEET eligibility criteria notifications every year, so older versions like 2023 eligibility no longer are valid. Last year’s note and reservation percentages, age cut-off dates, and subject relaxations have all been different before. Candidates should count on what the official information bulletin released with the application form says, not on last-year coaching notes.
