How to Prepare for JEE Main 2025 Second Attempt and JEE Advanced
JEE Main and JEE Advanced are two of the most important engineering entrance exams in India for admissions in prestigious colleges like IITs, NITs, IIITs etc. There are several factors to consider while making a study plan balancing both the exams like:
- Is the student writing board exams or is a dropper?
- How did the first attempt of JEE Main go?
- Which other exams is one targetting?
We are going to cover the strategies to balance all these exams and more in this article.
JEE Main 2025 Second Attempt and JEE Advanced Dates
The following are the dates of the upcoming Important exams
- CBSE Board Exams Grade XII Science - Typically from Feb 17 to Mar 29
- JEE Main 2025 Second Attempt - April 1 to April 8
- JEE Advanced 2025 - May 18
Based upon the above information, the students can plan their preparation for JEE Main and Advanced Preparation with the help of your coaching teachers.
How to Revise for JEE Main and JEE Advanced 2025
The following points are to be kept in mind for revising for JEE are:
Make a Good Revision Plan:
One of the most important aspects of the JEE main and advanced preparation for the last few months is to make a very good and holistic revision Plan. The following points can be kept in mind to make a good revision plan:
- Give balanced time to all three subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Each subject has their own individual cutoff which one must clear and each subject has their advantages. For example, in Chemistry, you can score more marks in less time if one knows the concepts. In Physics, the questions are relatively easier or shorter than Mathematics, so one can score good marks in Physics as well. In Mathematics, by scoring more marks, one can set themselves apart and score a higher Percentile and Rank.
- Cover all the chapters in the revision plan and not look for just important chapters. The reason for this is two fold. One is "Tough Questions can come from any chapter and Easy Questions can also come from any chapter. " So one must prepare and practice all the chapters to a basic understanding level, so that if there are easy to moderate questions from a chapter, students can attempt them. The second reason is "A lot of questions in JEE come from multiple chapters and multiple concepts. " For example, they might ask questions in which concepts of Matrices and Permutations and Combinations are used. Or where complex numbers as well as Binomial Theorem concepts are used.
- Plan for Theory Revision as Well as Practice Problems. It is important to include timing for both revising theory points as well as solving practice problems in all 3 subjects. Ideally time spent practicing must be greater than just revising theory. One must revise from their own class notes or coaching modules, and if possible, make short notes to be used for last minute revision.
- Finish the Revision of Concepts at Least 2 Weeks before JEE Main. In the last two weeks, one must write a lot of Full Syllabus Mock Tests for JEE Main and Advanced. Also finishing the revision in time gives the mental advantage of not being stressed at the last minute. If need be, one can look at their short notes, specially for subjects like Inorganic Chemistry where revising more times might be required a few days before the final exam as well.
Also share your revision plan with your teachers and get inputs from them as to how you can improve it.
Stick to the Revision Plan and Follow a Daily Time Table:
Even if one has made an amazing plan, it is important to execute it on a day to day basis. For that, it is very important to have a daily time table. The following points need to be kept in mind while making a daily schedule:
- Adequate Number of Hours Dedicated to Self Study. The number of hours spent per day is subjective and depends upon many factors, like if the school of coaching is having classes or not. If the Classes are going on for 5-6 hours, then a student can plan for at least 6 more hours of 'Self Study'. And if there is no class, then a student can plan anywhere from 9 hours to 15 hours of study in a day, depending upon the ambition, motivation and requirement.
- Adequate Sleeping Time. It is very important to maintain a very good sleep cycle, including at least 7 hours of sleep per day. Also it is important to not sleep in the daytime, as the JEE Main exam takes place in two slots: 9 to 12 AM and 3 PM to 6 PM typically. So it is important to study everyday, in those hours.
- Actively Avoiding Distractions. In order to spend quality hours studying, it is important to stay away from distractions. That means not spending time on any devices like watching TV, scrolling on Social Media, listening to Music for extended hours etc. Any time spent on entertainment can be planned for the end of the day, and for a brief duration like half an hour.
- Taking Breaks at Regular Intervals. One can take short breaks of 5-10 minutes after every 1 Hour of focussed study time and take a short walk, drink water and eat healthy snacks.
Solve Previous Year Questions (PYQs) of JEE Main and Advanced:
The importance of solving previous year questions of the exam that the student is going to take cannot be overstated. The exams keep evolving year after year and it is important to get oneself exposed to the newer variety, difficulty level and topics of questions that are being asked in the exam in recent years. If it is not possible to solve all the previous questions, one can have a look at questions from the last 3 years.
Some of the PYQs can be solved chapterwise, and some can be taken as full syllabus mock tests.
Take JEE Main and Advanced Pattern Mock Tests:
In the months leading up to the JEE Main and Advanced, it is a good idea to take regular tests.
Frequency: Typically one test week, based upon the revision plan. If the coaching has a revision plan, then the tests will most likely be aligned with those, else one should align their revision plan with the test series that they are following.
In the last two weeks, one can take a test almost every day or every alternate day.
Strategy: The test attempt pattern is very important and the students can try a couple of strategies before coming across what is working for them, like which subject to attempt initially, in the middle and towards the end.
Also it is very important to attempt the questions in two rounds. In the first round, students should target easy to moderate questions that they know how to solve, and leave the more difficult or lengthy questions for the second round.
Analysis: Students must analyze the test after the test is over. Especially the questions that they were not able to solve correctly. If there were silly mistakes or too much negative marking.
One should also maintain a list of weak topics or concepts and revise them after the test, and remedy them by practicing problems based upon those and clearing doubts.
Clear Doubts (Taking Help from Teachers) :
It is very important to manage your time effectively, and the way to accelerate one's learning is to ask help from the experts. A student should not spend too much time on a particular question, and ask it as a doubt to the respective subject teachers. Though one should also not give up too easily on questions, as one can expect a certain level of questions in the exam as well.
One can also discuss their test scores and attempt patterns with their teacher so they can guide them as to how to improve it. And taking random videos on the internet is not helpful, as it is a waste of time and a lot of wrong or irrelevant information may also be present.
Plan for Boards (For Grade XII Students):
The students in Grade XII have an added effort of planning their revision keeping in mind their Board Exams, which is important as certain minimum percentages are also required for admission into NITs and IITs. One needs to dedicate around 3-4 days per subject, exclusive for board exams, but in the rest of the gap days between board exams, one must continue preparing for JEE Main and Advanced.
Which one to Focus? Main or Advanced?
This depends upon how did JEE Main January Attempt goes. If a student has secured really good marks in JEE Main first attempt, and has scored 99 percentile or more, they may focus exclusively on JEE Advanced. The students who score between 97 and 99 percentiles can balance between both JEE Main and JEE Advanced before the second attempt. Right after JEE Main second attempt, they can focus fully on JEE advanced. For remaining students, one should think of JEE Main and other exams like BITSAT, VITEEE etc. or else if they were really underprepared this year, then consider taking a drop year.
Enroll In a Good Coaching Institute
Planning and executing so many things for a competitive exam may sound overwhelming. That is why it is very important to be a part of a coaching, which supports the students even after their syllabus is over.
